I've played a number of competive sports through my life (Rugby, Lacrosse, & Hockey). Regular workouts were always a critical component to maintaining a higher level of fitness to compete effectively. What was missing along the way was a comprehensive means for recovery. After exploring several options, I landed on Upgrade Labs (Calgary). Regardless of your level of compete: Beer league, Pro, or just pick up with friends, the emphasis on recovery here makes a huge difference. Small in size, but big on results their AI-driven workstations, recovery options, & quality staff have changed the way I think about staying fit. Go have a look for yourself. Impressive! Their benchmarking process, plus the ability to measure your ongoing results is superb.

I always feel so much better walking out than walking in. The big squeeze, red bed and cold therapy are all awesome. All of the staff are incredibly kind, engaging, and highly knowledgeable. It always feels like such a positive environment when I go in, which really just adds to the benefit. Everyone is passionate and cheers each other on. Can't wait to try more of the fitness side during future appointments, but the recovery can't be beat. Highly recommend!

Evidence & context

What research says about cold therapy

Recovery

Reviews of whole-body cold therapy mostly show effects on perceived muscle soreness and recovery after intense exercise. The evidence base is heterogeneous and samples are often small.

Research base

Studies describe short-term effects on pain perception and mobility. Results are inconsistent and robust long-term data is largely missing — a therapeutic benefit is not established.

Limitations

Cold therapy does not replace medical treatment. Effect, dosage and frequency vary individually — pre-existing conditions require medical clearance beforehand.
