The effect

What whole-body cold does in the body

In whole-body cryotherapy you stand for two to three minutes in dry cold air between −85 and −110 °C. The air is extremely dry, barely penetrates deeper tissue and acts mainly on the cold receptors of the skin. The body answers with a measurable emergency programme — and that programme is the therapeutic effect.

  1. 01

    Cold stimulus

Around 5 million cold receptors in the skin report an extreme stimulus to the brain, while core body temperature stays almost unchanged.

  2. 02

    Centralisation

Skin vessels narrow and blood is shifted towards the body core, where it is enriched with oxygen and nutrients.

  3. 03

    Hormone response

The body releases endorphins, noradrenaline and inflammation-regulating messengers; pain signals are dampened.

  4. 04

    Rewarming

After the chamber the vessels widen again. Circulation surges through skin and muscle, metabolism and clearance run at full speed.

What cryotherapy is used for

Pain & inflammation
Used as a supportive measure with rheumatic conditions, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes.
Recovery & sport
After hard training sessions cold is used to reduce soreness and swelling and to shorten recovery time.
Skin
With eczema and psoriasis the cold stimulus may reduce itching and inflammatory activity.
Sleep & mood
The endorphin release is often described as mood-lifting; many users report calmer sleep.
Metabolism
The body heats against the cold, which raises energy turnover for several hours.
Immune system
The repeated stimulus is considered training for vessels and circulation and is used for hardening.

When cryotherapy is not suitable

The chamber is a strong circulatory stimulus. In these cases medical clearance is mandatory — or the treatment is excluded:

  • Untreated high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia
  • Severe cardiovascular disease, condition after heart attack
  • Acute infections with fever
  • Pregnancy
  • Cold allergy, Raynaud's syndrome, cold urticaria
  • Open wounds, severe circulatory disorders
