So fortunate to have found Plunge & Barrel — a true hidden gem on the island and an incredible space for contrast therapy. Amanda and the entire P&B team are genuinely passionate about health, recovery, and wellness, and it shows in the environment they’ve created. Every detail feels intentional and supportive of the experience. Some visits are very chill and quiet, just time to reset, while others are more social and community-oriented. The people who come through are friendly and encouraging, which adds to the overall vibe. Go in the morning and you’ll feel energized for the rest of the day. Go in the evening and you’ll sleep incredibly well. Highly recommend!

This place changed my life! Summer of 2024 a friend brought me here for contrast therapy and I’ve never looked back. Over the last couple of years I did it once in while until recently I’ve began doing contrast therapy 6 days a week. My weight is down, blood pressure is now normal, anger issues and anxiety have all subsided. I live in San Diego, but travel to Hawaii for work often and my non-negotiable is getting a week pass for when I’m here. The staff is awesome, and the Operations Manager Amanda is the best!!! If you’re in Hawaii this place is a must!!

Evidence & context

What research says about cold therapy

Recovery

Reviews of whole-body cold therapy mostly show effects on perceived muscle soreness and recovery after intense exercise. The evidence base is heterogeneous and samples are often small.

Research base

Studies describe short-term effects on pain perception and mobility. Results are inconsistent and robust long-term data is largely missing — a therapeutic benefit is not established.

Limitations

Cold therapy does not replace medical treatment. Effect, dosage and frequency vary individually — pre-existing conditions require medical clearance beforehand.
